Christmas is for spoiling your spouse more than usual.

Christmas is for making a child's dream come true.

Christmas is not about shopping, it's about family.

Merry Christmas to my extended New Jersey family.

Weirdly enough, I find passing the guard easy (I'm a purple belt under Saulo Riberio). Everything else is hard.

If I joined your club I would be tapping.

A lot.

I'm too old to let my ego get in the way of learning.

I almost mentioned the "10,000 hour rule" in this post, but I couldn't figure out a way to squeeze it in. I'm glad you did!

"In fact, I don't want a lot of anything anymore." I think I'm getting to that point in my life too, Rumi.

I LOVE having a room full of books. What most people would have as a formal living room we call our "library." It has an entire wall of bookshelves filled with books.

I will get an ebook reader. Carrying my library with me is as magical as carrying my music collection with me. I get that.

I have a Tilley hat that I wear for yard work and sometimes to the beach on bright days. Other than that, I don't wear it much. Maybe I should, you know, once I get that ebook reader.

I don't think anything else comes close when it comes to personal self defense. But someone can take my gun away and use it against me. I'm not too hip to that.

I have a Kindle, bought after experimenting with both a Sony Reader and a nook. I wish more of my technical books could be had in digital form. I would love to have them on my Kindle. It would expand the utility of the device ten-fold.

I will sometimes read on my iPhone, but I don't like to. It's something I do in a pinch. I don't read books on my iPad because it's too much like reading on a computer screen. I don't like that because the backlight fatigues my eyes when reading for long periods.

I use my iPad to read (and mark) PDFs. But these are technical papers and not books.

I also prefer books, but I don't want to have a lot of books anymore.

In fact, I don't want to have a lot of anything anymore. I want fewer things and just those that I'm using or mean something (really, really special).

So, books I intend to keep I buy on my Kindle unless they are technical books that are not available on the Kindle. Other books I borrow from the library unless I can't get them.

I buy books, but reluctantly.

I wear a Tilley hat. It pulls down nicely over my face when it's bright and I want to shade my eyes for a nap. :) I like naps, too... and my Tilley hat.

I like this post. I do not do BJJ, but I appreciate the explanation and the point that it's difficult. Most things worth doing are difficult, take years of study and practice to develop proficiency, and require effort to maintain excellence.

For most technical skills, the 10,000-hour rule applies. That's five years full time. Those with innate skills cheat the rule; those without pay extra for entering the realm of proficiency. It all averages out.
